How to use this spacing calculator
Enter the total length you’re working with, how many holes or dowels you need, and the margin from each end to the first and last hole. The calculator divides the remaining space evenly and lists every hole’s position measured from the left edge — mark them directly off this list instead of doing the division by hand.
Formula
Usable Length = Total Length − (2 × Margin)
Spacing = Usable Length ÷ (Holes − 1)
Position(n) = Margin + (n × Spacing)
Spacing = Usable Length ÷ (Holes − 1)
Position(n) = Margin + (n × Spacing)
Marking from a single reference edge — rather than measuring each new gap from the last hole — keeps small errors from stacking up across the row, which is the usual reason evenly spaced holes end up slightly uneven by the last one.
